In 2023, CarTrade Tech acquired OLX's Classifieds and Auto Transactions business in India, adding to a platform portfolio built through earlier acquisitions of CarWale and BikeWale (2016), Adroit Auto (2017), and a stake in Shriram Automall (2018).
Company Description
CarTrade Tech, originally incorporated in 2000 and renamed ahead of its 2021 IPO, is a multi-channel auto platform connecting new and used vehicle buyers, dealers and OEMs. It operates brands including CarWale, CarTrade, BikeWale, CarTrade Exchange, Adroit Auto and AutoBiz, plus a majority stake in B2B vehicle auction platform Shriram Automall.
The business is organized into three segments: the Consumer Group (new and used vehicle classifieds and research via CarWale and BikeWale), the Remarketing Group (B2B vehicle auctions, largely through Shriram Automall), and the Classifieds Group.
The company has grown through acquisition — CarWale and BikeWale (2016), Adroit Auto (2017), a stake in Shriram Automall (2018), and OLX India's Classifieds and Auto Transactions business (2023) — alongside organic launches like the CarWale abSure certified used-car programme and CarTrade Labs, its AI and data science unit.
A note on positioning: unlike most companies in our coverage, CarTrade Tech is a well-known, NIFTY 500-listed platform business, not an under-the-radar small-cap. We have included it here as it was flagged for coverage, but readers should weigh that context against our usual focus on quieter, less-followed companies.
In Their Own Words
Performance & Profit Track
Financial data for CarTrade Tech found in public sources at the time of writing was inconsistent across periods. Pull exact, current-quarter revenue, profit and segment-wise figures directly from the company's exchange filings and investor presentations before publishing.
Why almost nobody has looked at this yet
-
1
Already well-covered: as a NIFTY 500 constituent with a known consumer brand (CarWale), CarTrade Tech does not fit the "overlooked" positioning of most companies in our library — its inclusion here is more of a business breakdown than an under-the-radar find.
-
2
Segment complexity: with three distinct business segments and several acquired brands, its consolidated numbers can obscure how each underlying business is actually performing.
-
3
Platform economics are easy to misjudge: like many classifieds/marketplace businesses, its unit economics and margin drivers differ meaningfully from traditional auto dealerships, which can lead to surface-level comparisons.
